Clinic Guidelines

The clinic should be used for the purpose of receiving first aid treatment for injuries or for sudden illness. When the nurse is not on campus a substitute nurse will provide services on campus or the student should report to an assistant principal’s office.

When it is necessary for the student to see the nurse, he or she must first get a pass from his or her teacher.  When the student returns to class, he or she will return with the pass time and dated to verify visit.

To protect all children from communicable illnesses, students infected with certain diseases are not allowed to come to school while they are contagious. Students should be symptom-free for 24 hours before returning to school. Contact your campus nurse if you are unsure whether or not your child should return to school.

Nurse Responsibilities

Our students are our most valuable resource. The school nurse serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, community and healthcare providers to advocate for student health and a healthy school environment. School nursing is a professional registered nursing specialty that involves identification, assessment, prevention, and intervention to remedy or modify students' health needs. The nurses' goal is to promote the optimum health of students and the students' abilities to achieve their individual educational goals. Nurses monitor required immunizations, perform mandated health screenings, track communicable diseases, plan for emergencies and provide direct care to students.

We would like to assure you that medical information about your child is treated as confidential by the nurses and all school staff. We do not share information about your child with outside parties nor can we discuss health concerns of any other student with you.

New State requirement for health services

Senate Bill 12 now requires parents to provide annual written consent for school nurses and other qualified staff (including athletic trainers) to give students routine first aid and health checks. This consent process is similar to HIPAA requirements.

Without a signed consent form, MISD Health Services cannot provide care for non-emergency illnesses or injuries, and parents may be called to pick up their child. Emergency care and state-mandated health screenings are not affected by this law.
